Lot 526: A Collection of Vintage Childrens Books including Rupert the Bear and Beatrix Potter
A group collection of vintage children’s books primarily featuring Rupert the Bear and the works of Beatrix Potter. The lot includes a copy of The Monster Rupert, a story and picture book published by Daily Express and Sampson Low, circa 1950. This volume features pictorial boards, a red cloth-wrapped spine, and is subtitled as containing 200 cut-outs in colour.
Also included is a Beatrix Potter volume published by F. Warne and Co Ltd, featuring cream-coloured pictorial boards with an illustration of rabbits on the front cover. The lot further contains the Rupert Story Collection with pictorial boards, a Rupert Colour Library softcover edition, and a 1972 Rupert book published by Purnell (S.B.N. 361 02130 5) with yellow pictorial boards.
Condition report:
The items are in as-found condition with varying degrees of handling and shelf wear. The Monster Rupert shows significant wear to the board edges and corners, surface soiling to the front cover, and the spine appears to have a period or later red cloth repair; internal cut-out sections have not been verified for completeness. The Beatrix Potter volume shows notable surface staining and soiling to the cream boards along with corner bumping. The Rupert Story Collection is in generally good condition with minor shelf wear. The Rupert Colour Library shows corner creasing and general wear consistent with use. Age-related toning is present across the collection.
