Lot 484: A Collection of Weathered Natural Stone Garden Ornaments and Architectural Elements
A collection of natural stone garden ornaments and architectural features, likely carved from gritstone or sandstone. The assortment includes a large, flattened circular cap stone with a roughly hewn surface, traditionally used as the top of a staddle stone. Also included is a spherical stone ball finial or coping ball with a deeply weathered patina, a square-form stone block featuring a central square-cut cavity intended for use as a mortar or small trough, and a smaller cylindrical stone section. These pieces demonstrate traditional British vernacular stonework techniques. Three items bear small white rectangular adhesive labels with the handwritten numerals 77.
Large circular stone diameter: approximately 40cm – 50cm.
Condition report:
The stones exhibit significant weathering and aging consistent with long-term outdoor exposure. There is widespread lichen and moss growth across all surfaces, along with surface erosion and pitting typical of aged gritstone. Various chips and irregular edges are present throughout, commensurate with age and utility.
