Lot 45: Charles Frank Frank-Nipole 10x50 Field 5 Coated Optics Binoculars
A pair of mid-20th-century prismatic binoculars produced for the Glasgow-based firm Charles Frank under the Frank-Nipole brand name. The binoculars feature a 10×50 specification with a 5-degree field of view. The body is finished with a black textured grip and metal prism covers and lens barrels. The left prism cover is marked Frank-Nipole, Coated Optics, and No 9077, with the serial number partially appearing on a separate white label. The right prism cover is marked Charles Frank, 10 x 50, and Field 5. The unit is equipped with a central focus wheel and adjustable eyepieces. A tan leather neck strap is attached via metal lugs. The lenses are designated as fully coated optics.
Condition report:
The binoculars exhibit heavy cosmetic wear consistent with age and significant use. There is extensive paint loss and scratching to the metal edges, eyepieces, and objective lens rims. The right prism cover has been defaced with the names JOAN and STEPHENS handwritten in white paint. An orange adhesive price tag is present on the right housing. The tan leather neck strap is in poor condition, showing heavy cracking, surface loss, and signs of significant age-related degradation. The optics appear dusty and would require professional cleaning. The mechanical function of the focus mechanism and the optical alignment have not been tested.
