Lot 42: A Collection of Vintage Sewing and Decorative Storage Boxes and a Quality Street Confectionery Tin with Buttons
A collection of vintage sewing and storage items. The group includes a cylindrical metal confectionery tin for Mackintosh’s Quality Street, featuring printed graphic illustrations and containing a large assortment of buttons in various materials, colours, and sizes. Also included is a rectangular woven straw sewing basket with a hinged lid decorated with an embroidered bird and floral scene. The basket features a red tufted satin interior containing sewing notions such as white shoulder pads and curtain tape, with labels for Rufflette. The collection further comprises a light blue fabric-covered box with silk-style embroidery of a bird on a flowering branch, consistent with 20th-century Chinese export jewellery boxes. Completing the lot is a hexagonal wooden box with dark wood foliate inlays on the lid and side panels. Items bear auction lot stickers numbered 7 and 42.
Condition report:
The collection shows general signs of age and use throughout. The Quality Street tin exhibits surface wear, minor oxidation, and light scratches. The woven straw basket has wear to the edges and some loose threads to the lid embroidery. The embroidered fabric box shows light surface soiling and minor fraying at the corners. The wooden box has light surface scratches consistent with handling.
