Lot 348: Portmeirion Corsets Advertising Transfer Printed Dinner Plate
A Portmeirion circular ceramic dinner plate featuring black transfer-printed decoration on a cream-coloured ground. The central motif depicts an advertisement for Swanbill Corsets from the Ladies’ Warehouse, Piccadilly, showing a woman in a corset with accompanying text detailing pricing and fitments. The rim is decorated with six circular medallions, each portraying a woman in a different style of Victorian-era corsetry, framed by various patterned borders. This item is characteristic of the Portmeirion advertising series produced in the mid to late 20th century. Two adhesive labels are present on the front: an orange sticker marked 348 and a white lot label marked 17 17. No maker’s marks are visible on the front of the plate.
Condition report:
The plate exhibits extensive fine crazing to the glaze across the entire surface. There is significant yellowish-brown staining and discolouration, particularly visible in the central area around the main transfer print. Two adhesive labels are attached to the upper surface. No major chips or cracks are visible from the front view.
