Lot 239: A Collection of Victorian and Art Deco Leaded Stained Glass Architectural Panels including a Smoke Room Pub Window
A collection of architectural leaded stained glass panels, primarily of British origin and dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The group includes a rectangular Victorian pub window featuring the words Smoke Room in stylized white glass set within a dark leaded frame. The central section consists of amber-toned panes hand-painted with detailed hop vines and cones. This is surrounded by an inner green glass border and a wide outer border of textured clear glass accented with amber and green circular glass jewels.
The collection also features a large heraldic armorial window composed of clear glass in a traditional diamond quarry pattern. The central hand-painted crest depicts an elephant carrying a golden castle, known as the Elephant and Castle motif, flanked by two black towers on a green field. A second elephant is visible in the lower section of the shield. Below the crest is a bifurcated scroll with a Latin motto reading CONSILIUM SANCTUM.
Also included is a large Art Deco architectural panel featuring a bold geometric arrangement of yellow, green, and clear glass. The central design depicts stylized black and white leaf forms within a shield-shaped frame. Additional pieces include a long narrow panel with a repeating green and clear trefoil pattern, a panel with a blue border and central polychrome sunburst design, and a small rectangular panel with a green, clear, and red geometric grid.
Condition report:
The panels appear to be in good architectural condition for their age. The lead cames are generally stable, though showing typical surface oxidation and an accumulation of dust and grime. Some larger panels exhibit minor bowing consistent with long-term vertical installation. No major cracks, breaks, or missing glass segments are immediately apparent from visual inspection. The hand-painted details on the Smoke Room and heraldic panels show light surface wear but remain clear and legible. Several panels have small adhesive labels attached to the glass. All items would benefit from professional cleaning.
