Lot 238: Claude H Rowbotham, at Brodick Isle of Arran, Etching with Aquatint
Claude Hamilton Rowbotham (1864-1949). A hand-coloured etching with aquatint titled at Brodick Isle of Arran. The composition features a single masted sailing boat on a calm bay under a hazy sky, with the peaks of the Isle of Arran in the distance. The foreground includes a rocky shore with small figures or livestock. The work displays a distinct plate mark and is signed in pencil Claude H Rowbotham in the lower right margin and titled in the lower left. The print is housed in a glazed gilt frame with a repeating scalloped or gadrooned decorative pattern.
Condition report:
Significant overall toning and yellowing to the paper. The frame exhibits surface wear and minor losses to the gilt finish. Dust and debris are visible behind the glass. Two auction lot labels are adhered to the glass and frame.
