Lot 188: Victorian Framed Needlework Sampler by Annie White Dated 1864
A mid-Victorian needlework sampler worked in wool yarn on a woven canvas ground. The central design depicts a multicoloured floral bouquet featuring roses and foliage in shades of pink, white, blue, and green, positioned on a solid red background. This is surrounded by a wide border of repeating stylized red and white flowers on a sage green ground. A vertical inscription worked into the needlepoint along the right edge of the central red field identifies the maker: MISS ANNIE WHITE AGED 12 1864. The textile is presented in a period dark stained wooden ogee-profile frame with a gilded inner slip.
Condition report:
The textile exhibits age-related fading, most notably to the red background which shows vertical tonal variation and streaking. There is minor wear to some of the raised wool threads. The wooden frame shows significant signs of age and wear including scuffs, surface scratches, and small losses to the finish. The bottom-right corner joint is slightly separated. An adhesive sticker is present on the surface of the glass in the top right corner.
