Lot 449: A Victorian Style Mahogany Nursing Chair with Spindle Gallery
A Victorian style mahogany occasional armchair, frequently referred to as a lady or nursing chair. The frame is constructed from mahogany with a dark polished finish, featuring a spoon shaped back containing a central padded panel. Positioned below the upholstered section is a decorative gallery comprising six turned spindles. The chair has open, scrolled arms and is raised on turned front legs with slightly splayed rear legs. The seat and back panel are upholstered in a cream coloured fabric with a repeating small scale floral sprig pattern in red and green. The edges are finished with a green braided gimp trim. A small yellow rectangular sticker with the numeral 2 is located on one of the front legs. No maker marks or stamps are visible on the frame.
Condition report:
The chair is in good overall condition. There is minor surface wear, including small scuffs and abrasions to the wood frame, consistent with age and use. The upholstery is clean and tightly fitted, indicating it is likely a later replacement. The joints appear to be stable and sound.
