A vernacular English country style childs side chair, likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The chair features a ladder back design with three graduated horizontal slats set between uprights that terminate in simple rounded finials. The seat is constructed from woven rush. The frame is made from a dark-stained hardwood, possibly ash or elm, featuring square-section legs joined by a series of stretchers for stability. There are no visible makers marks or labels.
Condition report:
The chair is in poor condition and requires restoration. The woven rush seat is heavily worn and frayed, with significant losses to the front edge exposing the underlying wooden rail. One of the horizontal back slats shows a visible break or separation from the upright. The wooden frame has numerous scuffs, scratches, and areas of finish loss consistent with age and heavy use. A length of white cord is currently tied to the upper left upright.
