Lot 235: Attributed to Laurence [unclear], A Monochromatic View of Durham Cathedral, 1913
This monochromatic oil on board is attributed to the artist Laurence [surname illegible] and is dated 1913. The landscape depicts a topographical view of Durham under an expansive, cloudy sky. In the foreground, a river meanders through marshy land, its surface reflecting light and punctuated by vertical wooden pilings. A small herd of cattle is situated in the middle distance, leading the eye towards a multi-arched stone bridge spanning the water. Beyond the bridge, the skyline is dominated by the architectural profile of Durham Cathedral situated on a prominent hill alongside the town buildings.
