A late Victorian rectangular storage chest of utilitarian form, constructed with a mahogany exterior and secondary pine interior. The chest is shallow and elongated, featuring hand-cut dovetails at the corners and a dark-stained finish. It is fitted with a brass bail handle and a simple brass latch. The interior contains a single, fixed turned wooden spool or bobbin-like fitting, suggesting a specialised mechanical or functional application. The exterior retains faint, illegible white markings to the lower front face and a yellow auction lot sticker numbered 735. No maker labels or stamps are present.
Condition report:
The chest is in fair to poor condition. The exterior surfaces exhibit significant finish loss, particularly to the front and top. There are numerous deep scratches, surface scuffs, and abrasions throughout. The brass hardware is tarnished. The interior shows general wear consistent with age and utility.
