Lot 38: A porcelain cup and saucer decorated in the Iznik style

Auction will begin to close in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A porcelain cup and saucer set featuring decoration in the Ottoman Iznik or Kutahya style. The saucer is decorated with a dense polychrome design consisting of a central floral medallion encircled by intricate foliate arabesques and scrollwork in a palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, green, and ochre. The rim is finished with a repeating serrated sawtooth border in iron-red. The cup is of a deep-welled form with a flared, gilded rim. Its exterior is decorated with a band of blue underglaze geometric lattice-work near the rim, positioned above sparse hand-painted overglaze floral sprigs. The interior features underglaze blue foliate and floral motifs. Both pieces carry small white adhesive labels printed with the number 15. No maker’s marks or factory backstamps are visible. The set reflects the late 19th-century European interest in Orientalist and Persian ceramic designs, which were produced by factories such as Samson of Paris or Minton to cater to contemporary tastes.

Condition report:

The set is in good overall condition. There is some minor age-related rubbing to the gilding on the rim of the cup. No chips, cracks, or significant surface damage are visible.
