Lot 217A: New Zealand Rugby Haka Commemorative Tea Towel
A commemorative printed textile tea towel featuring the New Zealand rugby tradition of the haka. The design is dominated by the word HAKA in large red block lettering positioned vertically. The central illustration depicts a rugby player in a striped jersey and dark shorts performing the haka, set against a background of silhouetted teammates in grey tones. The right section of the cloth contains the full Māori lyrics and English translation for the Ka Mate haka. The English translation includes the lines It is death! It is death! It is life! It is life! and This is the hairy man / Who caused the sun to shine again for me. An inscription at the lower right corner attributes the work: haka composed by Te Rauparaha, Ngati Toa Chief. The textile is framed by a double border of red and charcoal grey stripes on a light cream-coloured base fabric.
