Lot 92: A Pair of Mason's Style Imari Pattern Ironstone Wash Jug and Basin
This ceramic set comprises a matching wash jug and large basin decorated in the traditional Imari palette. The items are made of ironstone and feature a design of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red with gilded highlights on a white ground. The decoration consists of dense floral motifs, including peonies and chrysanthemums, surrounded by scrolling foliate borders. The jug is notable for its hydra handle, which is modelled in the form of a scaly green dragon with a reddish-brown spine. The basin has a wide, flattened rim finished with a mustard-yellow border. This style and form are highly characteristic of English ironstone manufacturers from the mid-19th century, most notably Mason’s. Small adhesive lot labels bearing the numbers 2 and 92 are present on the body of the jug and the rim of the basin. No manufacturer backstamps or marks are visible.
Condition report:
The set appears to be in good overall condition. There is widespread surface crazing to the glaze and some rubbing to the gilded highlights, which is consistent with the age of the pieces. No significant chips, cracks, or repairs are visible in the provided image.
