Lot 914: A French Art Nouveau Gilt Metal Footed Jewellery Box
This oval jewellery box, attributed to French manufacture, is constructed from cast gilt metal in the Art Nouveau style. The hinged lid features a central high-relief motif of a putto or cherub figure amidst floral sprays. The sides are decorated with organic scrolling foliate designs and cartouches, and the casket is raised on four scrolled feet. The interior is lined with a padded pink silk fabric, finished with a twisted cord border to the lid and base. No maker’s marks are visible.
Condition report:
The item shows an aged patina with darkening to the recessed areas of the casting. There is visible wear to the gilding on the raised surfaces. The interior fabric lining is intact but displays age-related discolouration and some fraying. The hinge remains in good functional order.
