Lot 836: A Collection of Mabie Todd Swan Lever-Filler Fountain Pens and Caps, 14ct tips
A collection of vintage lever-filler fountain pens and associated caps manufactured by Mabie, Todd & Co. Ltd. in England. The assortment features pens in two distinct finishes: a marbled celluloid with a “cracked ice” or “marble and flake” pattern in black, cream, and gold tones, and a polished black celluloid. One marbled pen is fitted with a gold-toned nib, while another bears a gold-toned nib marked “SWAN 14CT”. These are paired with matching marbled caps, each featuring a single gold-tone band and a ball-ended clip. The black pen barrel is decorated with two gold-tone rings and bears an incised imprint reading “SWAN PEN MABIE TODD & CO LTD MADE IN ENGLAND”, fitted with a gold-toned nib marked “SWAN”. Its associated cap is plain black with a gold-tone band and lacks a clip. All instruments are equipped with side lever filling mechanisms.
Condition report:
The items are in used vintage condition. Visible brassing and wear to the gold plating are present on the clips, cap bands, and filling levers across the collection. One gold-toned nib shows significant darkening and oxidation, while others exhibit minor wear. The celluloid bodies and caps show surface scratches and scuffs consistent with age. The internal filling systems are likely to have ossified sacs and will require professional restoration for functional use.
