Lot 830: British Nickel-Plated Brass Metropolitan Pattern Service Whistle by J. Hudson and Co Birmingham
A British Metropolitan pattern service whistle constructed from nickel-plated brass. This cylindrical whistle was produced by J. Hudson and Co. of Birmingham, the primary manufacturer for this design which was used extensively by police forces and British military units. The barrel features a multi-line vertical stamped inscription. The top line reads THE, followed by partially illegible text that typically reads THE METROPOLITAN. The bottom lines are clearly stamped J HUDSON and CO and BIRMINGHAM. The construction includes a tapered mouthpiece, two rectangular sound apertures, and a fixed metal suspension ring at the base for attachment to a uniform or lanyard. This pattern is synonymous with British service signaling from the late 19th century through the First World War.
Condition report:
The item is in good antique condition with visible signs of service wear. There is significant thinning and loss of the nickel plating on the mouthpiece and the main barrel, exposing the underlying brass. Minor surface scratches and light oxidation are present throughout. The suspension ring is securely attached and the whistle is in functional condition.
