Lot 743: A Victorian Country Pine Blanket Chest
A 19th-century provincial blanket chest or storage trunk constructed from pine. The piece features a country vernacular design with a large single-panelled front and sits on integrated shaped bracket feet. The lid is configured with a central hinged section that is recessed between two fixed side galleries. The pine timber exhibits a characteristic wide grain and visible knots, showing evidence of having been stripped of an earlier finish. Hardware includes a central keyhole, without an external escutcheon, and two small metal hinges at the rear of the lid. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces.
Condition report:
The chest is in used antique condition with a well-worn patina consistent with age and utility. The surface displays numerous scuffs, scratches, and indentations, particularly across the lid. There is a minor visible split in the timber on the top of the lid.
