Lot 729: Victorian Mahogany Wall Mirror with Integrated Storage Compartment
A late Victorian mahogany wall-hanging mirror featuring a rectangular beveled glass plate set within a moulded frame. The piece is surmounted by an arched cresting decorated with deep relief-carved floral and foliate motifs. Below the mirror is an integrated storage box with a sloped, hinged lid, likely intended for brushes or toiletries. The front panel of the box is further embellished with a relief-carved flower head flanked by scrolling acanthus leaves. The structure is supported by sinuous curved brackets at the base of the frame. The mahogany has a dark, lustrous finish. No maker’s marks are visible on the piece; an auction lot label is affixed to the front panel.
Condition report:
The mirror plate shows significant signs of age, including prominent foxing and silvering degradation across the central and upper-left areas. The mahogany woodwork appears sound, showing general surface wear, minor indentations, and a buildup of dust consistent with its age and use.
