A Victorian needlepoint panel, in the style of Berlin wool work, depicting a romanticised pastoral scene. The central figure is a young woman dressed as a shepherdess holding a crook, seated within a landscape that includes stylised foliage, trees, and architectural motifs including palm trees in the background. The work is executed with coloured wool or silk threads on a fine canvas ground, primarily using petit point stitches for detailed areas such as the figure’s face. The textile is mounted behind glass in a period rectangular frame, likely mahogany or rosewood veneer, accented with contrasting light wood inlaid squares at the corners and a gilt-painted inner slip. Modern adhesive auction lotting labels are present on the right side of the frame.
Condition report:
The textile is in good overall condition with some expected fading and mellowing to the colours consistent with its age. The frame exhibits light surface wear and minor scuffs commensurate with its period. No significant tears, stains, or thread losses are apparent to the needlework through the glass.
