Lot 42: A Victorian Style Copper Helmet Coal Scuttle with Brass Handles
An antique helmet-form coal scuttle constructed from hammered sheet copper. The vessel features a wide, flared opening with a rolled rim and sits upon a circular pedestal base. It is fitted with two cast brass handles: a large overhead swing handle and a smaller fixed scrolling handle at the rear. Both handles are secured to the body with decorative brass escutcheons and copper rivets. The piece displays a natural, aged patina with areas of surface oxidation. This type of domestic fireplace accessory was widely produced in the United Kingdom during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces.
Condition report:
The scuttle is in used, antique condition. The copper body shows numerous visible dents and surface deformations, particularly around the lower section and base, consistent with its practical fireside application. There is significant surface oxidation and verdigris inside the vessel and in the crevices of the exterior. The brass handles have a dulled patina but remain firmly attached. General surface scratches and minor pitting are present throughout.
