Buyer's Premium:

A 19th-century hand-coloured steel engraving titled Borrowdale, Cumberland. The topographical landscape is based on an original drawing by Thomas Allom and was engraved by Alfred Le Petit. The scene depicts a winding river valley in the Lake District flanked by steep mountains, with figures and tall trees positioned in the foreground. This plate is characteristic of those produced for Fisher’s Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham and Northumberland Illustrated, published circa 1832 to 1835. The print is currently mounted upside down within its frame. The title BORROWDALE, CUMBERLAND. is printed at the top of the image (relative to its current orientation), with the artist’s credit T. Allom. and the engraver’s credit A. Le Petit. visible in the lower corners. The work is presented in a multi-layered cream-coloured mat and a gilt-edged frame.

Condition report:

The paper shows overall toning and yellowing consistent with age. The print is currently mounted upside down within the frame. The impression remains sharp with no immediate evidence of foxing, tears, or water damage visible through the glass. The frame and matting appear to be in good stable condition with minor wear to the gilt edges.
