This lithographic print, published by Frost & Reed Ltd. in 1944, is after an original portrait painting by the artist Arthur Pan. The subject, Sir Winston Churchill, is depicted in a formal three-quarter length portrait, seated in a red leather studded armchair wearing a dinner jacket and holding a cigar in his left hand. The artist’s name is printed in the upper right corner of the image. The top margin of the paper features a printed quote: We are all of us defending a Cause; the Cause of Freedom and of Justice; of the Weak against the Strong; Law against Violence, Mercy and Forbearance against Tyranny and Injustice. This is followed by a facsimile signature and date reading Winston S. Churchill Jan. 1st 1943. The bottom margin bears the publication inscription: Published in 1944 by Frost & Reed Ltd. Fine Art Publishers, Bristol & London, England. Copyright in all countries including the U.S.A. (Printed in England). The work is executed as a lithographic print on paper and is housed in a simple dark-stained wooden frame under glass. The print is currently mounted in an inverted orientation within the frame.
Condition report:
The paper support shows significant age-related toning and widespread foxing across the margins. The wooden frame exhibits minor surface scuffs and wear consistent with age. A lot sticker is present on the lower-left corner of the glass. The print is currently oriented upside down within the frame and requires professional re-mounting.
