A large Japanese Imari porcelain charger of circular form featuring a lobed body and scalloped rim. The central roundel is decorated with a floral arrangement emerging from a blue vessel, enclosed by a double-line underglaze blue border. The cavetto and rim are divided into alternating radiating panels. One set of panels depicts floral sprays including peony and plum blossoms on a white ground, while the alternating panels show circular geometric and floral motifs reserved against a deep cobalt blue ground. The piece is decorated in underglaze blue with overglaze iron-red and gilt enamels. This style is characteristic of export wares produced in the Arita region during the late Edo or Meiji period. Two modern rectangular stock labels are present on the face: one orange label with handwritten numerals 258 and one white label with printed numerals 15 15.
Condition report:
The charger exhibits signs of age-related wear, including noticeable rubbing and loss to the overglaze gilding and iron-red enamels, particularly on the central motif and the blue-ground panels. The surface shows minor pitting and small dark spots (kiln dust) from production. Minor abrasions are present along the rim. No significant chips or cracks are apparent from the front view.
