APRIL AUCTION

Lot 76: Two Boxed Sets of Mid-Century and Early 20th-Century Flatware

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

This lot includes two boxed collections of assorted flatware. The first set features a modernist design with flat handles decorated in a black and white checkered pattern. This group consists of several pieces, including three serrated grapefruit spoons and a small knife. The knife blade is marked STAINLESS STEEL and bears a partial maker’s mark, possibly signifying Japan as the country of origin. This set is housed in its original orange and dark brown rectangular presentation box.

The second set is a collection of fish knives and forks, in the style of Sheffield manufacturers such as Harrison Fisher and Co. The blades and tines feature engraved foliate and scroll decorations. The handles are cream-coloured, likely made of celluloid or a similar early plastic. Small stamps are visible on the metal components, characteristic of silver plate marks, though they are not clearly legible. This collection is contained within a worn cardboard box decorated with a blue and white diamond pattern.

Condition report:

Both sets show signs of age and use. The modernist checkered-handle set appears to be in overall good condition with only minor surface marks. The fish cutlery exhibits surface tarnishing and wear to the metal consistent with regular use and age. Both presentation boxes are heavily worn, particularly the blue and white diamond box which shows significant scuffing, staining, and loss to the edges.
