Lot 470: Two Vintage Mechanical Gramophones comprising an HMV Portable Model and a Selecta Cabinet Model
This lot consists of two early 20th-century British mechanical acoustic gramophones. The first is a portable HMV (His Master’s Voice) model housed in a black rexine covered wooden case with a carry handle. The interior lid features the gilt transfer of the iconic Nipper dog listening to a phonograph, accompanied by the text Patents Applied For. It is equipped with a brown felt-covered turntable, a chrome-plated tonearm, and a storage clip for the soundbox inside the lid. The second is a Selecta cabinet model constructed from dark mahogany-stained wood. The interior of the lid displays a gilt Selecta REGD. transfer in a stylised script. This instrument includes a green felt-covered turntable and a chrome-plated tonearm with soundbox. The cabinet features two sets of front doors, with the upper pair likely concealing the internal horn for volume control and the lower section intended for record storage. The original winding handle is present and remains attached to the side of the cabinet.
Condition report:
The HMV portable case shows surface scuffs, wear to the rexine edges, and light oxidation to the metallic hardware. The Selecta cabinet displays surface scratches, dust accumulation, and minor finish wear consistent with age and use. Mechanical movements and playback functionality have not been tested. Both items are sold as-is for restoration or decorative purposes.
