Lot 405: Late 19th Century Victorian Pine Storage Chest
A rectangular pine storage chest of planked construction, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The piece features a simple box form with a decorative moulded edge running along one side, likely serving as a plinth or top lip. Constructed from solid pine planks with visible grain and knots throughout. The construction appears to be simple butt-jointed or nailed planks. No external hardware such as hinges, handles, or locks are visible in this orientation. The exterior retains two contemporary inventory labels: a small rectangular orange sticker with handwritten numbers and a small circular white sticker.
Condition report:
The chest is in a well-used as found condition. It shows significant signs of age and utility, including surface scratches, scuffs, and areas of dark staining and discoloration across multiple surfaces. The timber appears dry and would benefit from sympathetic restoration or waxing. There are small circular indentations consistent with old nail holes or historic, inactive insect flight holes.
