Lot 398: Victorian Figured Walnut Octagonal Sewing Table
A Victorian figured walnut octagonal sewing table, also known as a work table. The piece features a hinged octagonal lid with a figured walnut veneer and a moulded edge, fitted with a keyhole to the front. The interior is divided into multiple compartments and lined with a combination of green silk and a decorative gold-on-white geometric patterned paper. The layout includes perimeter divisions for sewing notions and a central, raised octagonal section with a green silk-covered lid and a small metal ring handle. The top is supported by a tapering, faceted octagonal pedestal column. This column rests on a heavily carved circular collar, which is mounted on a tripod base. The base consists of three cabriole legs, each decorated with carved acanthus leaf motifs at the knees and terminating in scrolled feet. No maker’s marks or labels are visible.
Condition report:
The item is in fair to good antique condition. The exterior wood finish shows age-related wear including surface scratches, minor indentations, and a small orange adhesive label on the top. The interior lining shows distress, with the patterned paper peeling and lifting in several compartments. The structural integrity of the base and legs appears sound, with general wear visible on the feet. The key is missing.
