A set of Burmese lacquered stacking food containers, originating from the Bagan region. The assembly consists of a deep circular base, three nesting shallow trays, and a domed lid. Each component is constructed from a wood or bamboo core coated in traditional black lacquer. The exterior is decorated using the shwe zawa technique, featuring intricate gold leaf motifs of floral and foliate designs. Both the lid and the internal trays contain inset panels of finely woven bamboo or rattan, displayed in a diagonal twill pattern. The underside of the lid and interior of the trays are finished in a reddish-brown or black lacquer. No maker’s marks or signatures are present. Contemporary inventory stickers are visible on the exterior, including an orange label marked 395 and a white label marked 19.
Condition report:
The set exhibits signs of age and use consistent with its vintage. There is visible rubbing and wear to the gilded shwe zawa decoration, especially around the rims and edges. The black lacquer surface shows scattered scuffs, fine scratches, and some minor losses. The woven bamboo panels appear to be in good overall condition with no significant breaks or unravelling observed.
