Lot 309: Late 19th Century Sepia Portrait of a Gentleman in a Wooden Frame
A late 19th-century bust-length portrait of a gentleman, likely an albumen or matte collodion print. The subject is depicted with a prominent moustache, wearing a high-collared shirt and a textured jacket. The photograph is mounted onto a large rectangular tan card featuring a printed double-line oval border. It is housed behind glass in a simple, dark-stained wooden frame. A small white adhesive label with the number 7 is present on the lower left of the image area, and an orange auction sticker marked 309 is attached to the upper right corner of the frame. No photographer’s marks or signatures are visible.
Condition report:
The photograph shows signs of moderate fading and surface grime. The surrounding card mount displays light foxing and age-related discolouration. A significant glare from an external light source is reflected on the glass across the bottom half of the image. The wooden frame shows minor surface wear consistent with age.
