An Art Deco fireplace surround constructed from glazed ceramic tiles, often referred to as faience. The design features a bold geometric composition characteristic of the 1930s, including stepped or ziggurat motifs to one side and deep recessed rectangular mouldings framing the central fire opening. The primary tiles are finished in a high-gloss mottled cream and beige glaze. A secondary decorative element consists of multi-coloured speckled tiles in shades of pink, blue, and grey, a popular finish for British domestic interiors of the inter-war period. The surround is presented in a disassembled state and consists of multiple individual tiles and cast sections.
Condition report:
The surround is currently disassembled. The glazed surfaces are in generally good condition, retaining a visible sheen, although there is surface dirt and grime throughout consistent with age and removal from an original setting. There are minor localized areas of wear and small chips along some of the tile edges and corners, which is typical for reclaimed architectural ceramics of this type.
