Start price: £2

Auction house commission:

A collection of The War Papers partwork magazines, published in the United Kingdom circa the 1970s. This series was issued in weekly parts, designed to document the history of the Second World War through the inclusion of full-scale facsimile reproductions of contemporary newspapers. Included in the group is Part 85, featuring a facsimile of the Daily Express, number 12,781, dated Tuesday 13 May 1941. This facsimile carries the headline Rudolf Hess Killed By Plane Jump and a red superimposed stamp asking Is This The War’s Last Secret?. The masthead identifies the Daily Express as being founded by Lord Beaverbrook. Another issue in the collection features a green cover with the headline Doenitz U-Boat Genius. The lot also contains partially visible issues from the related series titled The War and Heroes. The items are unbound as issued, featuring semi-gloss paper covers and newsprint-style paper for the facsimile inserts. The original cover price of 30p is visible on the publications.

The items are in generally good condition. There is light age-related toning to the edges of the newsprint and semi-gloss paper. Minor creasing is visible on some covers and edges. Occasional light foxing is present, which is consistent with the age and nature of the paper stock. No significant tears, heavy staining, or ex-library marks are observed.
