A wooden sloped-front box, of the form typically used for a coal scuttle or purdonium, constructed with a warm-toned wood finish. The piece features decorative brass-plated strap-style hinges and a prominent turned wood handle mounted on brass supports. A small brass pull is located on the side of the sloped lid. The side panels are decorated with vertical incised lines. The construction includes a slanted front panel designed to open forward. No maker marks are visible.
