Lot 317:
L.S. Lowry (1887-1976), A Village Square, oil on canvas or board, dated 1943. The artwork depicts a bustling industrial street scene populated by numerous stylized, elongated human figures, often referred to as ‘matchstick figures, ‘ set amidst an urban landscape with factories and buildings under a pale sky. The predominant color palette is muted, featuring greys, browns, yellows, and limited accents of red and blue. The painting is presented in a simple wooden frame. In the lower left corner, the signature and date ‘L.S. LOWRY 1943’ are clearly visible. On the lower right of the frame, there are two labels with numbers, an orange one displaying ‘317’ and a white one with ’24’, likely representing auction or inventory identifiers.
