L.S. Lowry (1887-1976), A Village Square, oil on canvas or board, dated 1943. The artwork depicts a bustling industrial street scene populated by numerous stylized, elongated human figures, often referred to as ‘matchstick figures, ‘ set amidst an urban landscape with factories and buildings under a pale sky. The predominant color palette is muted, featuring greys, browns, yellows, and limited accents of red and blue. The painting is presented in a simple wooden frame.
