Lot 528: The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E. or M.B.E. (Ladies') Insignia, by Toye, Kenning & Spencer
A Ladies’ insignia for The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, likely of the O.B.E. or M.B.E. class, manufactured by Toye, Kenning & Spencer Limited London. The insignia, crafted from gold-toned metal, features a crown surmount, a central circular medallion inscribed ‘FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE’ surrounding a figural design, and a four-pointed cross with lion motifs. It is suspended from a pleated red moiré ribbon with grey borders and a red tassel. The insignia is presented in its original fitted black hinged case with a white satin-lined interior, the interior lid marked with the Royal Arms and ‘TOYE, KENNING & SPENCER LIMITED LONDON’. An accompanying printed document, titled ‘THE MOST EXCELLENT ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE,’ provides wearing instructions for ‘O.B.E. M.B.E. (Ladies.)’ and indicates ‘SEE OVER’.
