Lot 494: Antique Oak Barley Twist Firescreen with Needlework Sampler Panel, Late 19th Century
An antique firescreen, constructed of dark-stained wood, likely oak, featuring barley twist columns and a shaped top rail with a central handle cut-out. The central panel consists of a hand-stitched textile, executed in a sampler-style embroidery. The embroidery depicts the English alphabet “ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ” in red thread across the top, alongside stylized human figures, birds, dogs, potted plants, a ship, and geometric borders. A central blank cartouche is present. A partial date, possibly “1880” or “1890,” is faintly discernible within the textile.
