OCTOBER SALE
Lot 176:
A pair of baluster-form ceramic vases, characterized by extensive polychrome enamel and raised gold (moriage-style) decoration. Each vase features four primary circular cartouches depicting male figures, possibly noble or scholarly, with distinct facial hair and halos, positioned against a simplified landscape backdrop. Surrounding these cartouches are densely patterned areas incorporating geometric designs, stylized scales, and floral motifs in a vibrant palette of blues, greens, reds, and browns, all heavily outlined and accented with intricate gilding. The overall aesthetic suggests a highly ornate Japanese export style from the late 19th to early 20th century. A small white sticker bearing the number ‘6’ is affixed to the rim of the left vase.
