Lot 498: UK 1840 1d Penny Black, SG 2, Four Margins, Red Maltese Cross on Cover
This philatelic item consists of a Great Britain 1840 one penny black (Penny Black) stamp, SG 2, on a partial cover front. The stamp is an imperforate line-engraved issue in black, displaying corner check letters J and L in the lower stars. It is cancelled with a red Maltese Cross strike. The cover fragment is addressed in manuscript to George Higham Esquire, Brighouse. The item is presented on a black card backing inside a clear protective sleeve.
Condition report:
The stamp is used and possesses four clear margins. The red Maltese Cross cancel is well-defined. The cover front shows some age-related toning and minor foxing to the paper, with rough edges consistent with its removal from a complete envelope.
