JUNE AUCTION

Lot 485: A 19th or Early 20th Century Wooden Rope-Tensioned Field Drum

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A late 19th or early 20th-century rope-tensioned field drum of wooden construction. The cylindrical shell is finished in a dark stain, while the wooden counter-hoops are decorated with diagonal painted banding in red, white, and blue. The drum retains its animal skin vellum heads, held in place by a cord tensioning system featuring leather slides, or ears. No maker marks, regimental crests, or unit designations are visible on the shell or hoops. The item represents a standard pattern of field drum used for military, ceremonial, or civil purposes during the turn of the century.

Condition report:

The drum is in aged condition with visible wear throughout. Significant paint loss and abrasions are present on the wooden counter-hoops. The vellum heads show heavy patination, staining, and surface scuffing. The tensioning ropes are discoloured and show signs of fraying. The leather slides are intact but exhibit surface cracking and hardening. The wooden shell shows various scuffs, scratches, and minor dents. Two modern auction labels are present on the upper hoop.
