A late 19th or early 20th-century U-shaped fireplace fender constructed from cast iron with brass ornamentation. The fender features a relief-moulded repeating foliate and scroll pattern along the upper edge of the horizontal rail. The cast iron is finished in a traditional black paint or blacking. It is decorated with four spherical brass finials mounted into the top rail and side returns. The interior vertical face of the right-hand return displays cast-in numerals, including 6310, likely representing a pattern or registration number. The construction is heavy and solid, characteristic of British domestic metalware.
Condition report:
The fender is in used, as-found condition. There is visible wear to the black surface finish, with areas of oxidation and accumulated dust. Several vacant holes along the top rail suggest that some original decorative elements, such as additional finials or a gallery rail, may be missing. The brass finials exhibit a natural aged patina and some surface pitting.
