JUNE AUCTION

Lot 316: Two decorative ceramic items comprising a Japanese style earthenware vase and a reticulated floral plate

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

This lot consists of two separate ceramic pieces. The first is a large, ovoid earthenware vase in the Japanese Satsuma style with a flared neck. The body is decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamels and extensive raised gilding, known as moriage. A large cartouche features a traditional Japanese landscape with figures, surrounded by intricate floral and geometric brocade patterns on an orange-brown ground. The vase has a characteristic creamy, finely crazed glaze. The second item is a circular decorative plate, likely porcelain or fine white-bodied earthenware, featuring a wide reticulated or pierced rim with a scalloped edge and green lining. The centre is hand-painted with a bouquet of various flowers, including roses and primula, in shades of purple, blue, pink, and yellow. Six oval medallions on the border each contain a single floral sprig. Both items bear adhesive auction labels numbered 19 and 316. No manufacturer backstamps or signatures are visible on the exterior surfaces shown.

Condition report:

Both items exhibit significant damage. The vase has a large vertical crack extending from the rim down into the neck and shows overall fine crazing to the glaze. The reticulated plate has a prominent crack running through the centre from one side of the rim to the other.
