Lot 315: A Collection of Vintage Hand-Knitted Soft Toys Attributed to Jean Greenhowe Patterns and a Toy Side Drum
An assortment of vintage hand-knitted character dolls and accessories, including figures resembling designs from the Jean Greenhowe Scarecrow Family series. The primary figure features a white knitted head with black eyes and a yellow beak-like nose, dressed in a blue knitted jacket over a red shirt and brown trousers with yellow fringe. The collection further includes a knitted figure with a light blue and grey wavy-edged hat and yellow yarn hair, alongside a small multi-coloured striped knitted figure. Accompanying the soft toys is a miniature toy side drum featuring a red body and white drumhead, with a single black plastic drumstick. The items are contained within a vintage two-handled aluminium colander. These types of knitted figures were popular domestic craft projects in the United Kingdom during the mid-to-late 20th century.
Condition report:
The items are in used, played-with condition. The knitted toys show general wear, surface pilling, and some loose yarn fibres consistent with age. The toy drum exhibits minor surface marks. The aluminium colander shows typical surface oxidation, scratches, and signs of domestic use. Internal auction house labels are present on the rim and side of the colander.
