An English country-style side chair dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The chair is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, potentially oak or ash. The backrest features five horizontal slats set between two upright stiles. It is fitted with a traditional woven rush seat, arranged in a four-triangle pattern meeting at the centre. The underframe consists of spindle-turned front legs and square-section rear legs that continue from the back stiles, all joined by multiple stretchers. An orange adhesive inventory label is present on the left-hand back stile, bearing the handwritten ink inscription 23 304+.
Condition report:
The chair is in a used, as found condition. There is visible surface wear, scuffing, and loss of finish to the timber throughout, consistent with age and regular use. A significant accumulation of dust and cobwebs is present on the stretchers and the underside of the frame. The woven rush seat appears structurally sound but exhibits signs of age and wear.
