Lot 236: William Heaton Cooper (British, 1903-1995), A Pair of Lake District Landscape Watercolours
A pair of landscape watercolours on paper by the British artist William Heaton Cooper (1903-1995), depicting traditional views of the English Lake District. The first work shows a rocky lakeshore with looming fells and is signed w. heaton cooper in the lower right corner. The second work features a tranquil lake reflecting steep hillsides, executed in a matching stylistic manner. Both pieces utilize layered washes to define the characteristic topography and atmosphere of the region. The works are presented in matching stained wood frames under glass with deep green mounts.
Condition report:
Both works show evidence of significant toning and browning to the paper supports. Scattered foxing is present throughout both compositions, most notably in the sky regions. The pigment intensity appears somewhat muted, suggesting fading due to light exposure over time. The frames and glazing are in fair condition with minor surface wear and scuffs consistent with age.
