Buyer's Premium:

This watercolor on paper by T. Leslie Hawkes depicts a bustling street scene of an early morning flower market in Ulverston, Cumbria. The composition is centered around a prominent stone obelisk, with several figures gathered around flower stalls in the foreground. The background features characteristic English townhouses and shopfronts rendered in a representational style. The artist employs a muted colour palette consisting primarily of soft greys, browns, and earthy tones. The work is signed twice: once in ink within the lower right of the image as T. Leslie Hawkes ’84 and again in pencil on the lower left margin as T. Leslie Hawkes. A pencil inscription on the lower right margin reads Early morning market – Ulverston. The watercolor is presented in a gilt-moulded frame with a black mount and gold-toned inner fillet.

Condition report:

The paper shows light, even toning consistent with age and minor surface marks to the margins. The work appears free from significant foxing or water damage. The frame exhibits minor age-related wear and scuffing to the gilt surface.
