A pair of framed stipple engravings from the celebrated series Cries of London, after original compositions by Francis Wheatley R.A. (1747-1801). The first print is Plate 2, titled Milk below Maids, with the corresponding French title L’un vient du lait s’est tout chaud. It bears the inscriptions Painted by F. Wheatley R.A. and Engraved by L. Schiavonetti. The second print is Plate 4, titled Do you want any Matches?, with the corresponding French title Marchand d’Allumettes, achetés mes bonnes Allumettes. It is inscribed Painted by F. Wheatley R.A. and Engraved by A. Cardon, beneath the series title CRIES of LONDON. Both prints are executed using the stipple engraving technique and are printed in colours à la poupée. Each print displays visible plate marks and is housed in a matching dark wood frame with a cream-coloured mount.
Condition report:
Both prints exhibit significant age-related toning and foxing across the paper surface. There is evidence of plate wear consistent with later 18th or early 19th-century impressions. The frames show minor surface wear and light scuffing to the edges. The works have not been examined out of their frames.
