Lot 274: Potter, Beatrix. A Pair of Volumes: The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Two Bad Mice. F. Warne & Co., c. 1902-1904. Early Editions.
This lot comprises two vintage small-format volumes from the Beatrix Potter series, published by F. Warne & Co. The first volume is The Tale of Peter Rabbit, bound in brown paper-covered boards with a central colour-printed pictorial label depicting Peter Rabbit. The second volume is The Tale of Two Bad Mice, bound in grey paper-covered boards with a central colour-printed pictorial label showing a mouse with a broom. Both volumes bear the author’s name and the publisher’s imprint on the upper boards. These represent early printings of the classic children’s series, produced in the signature duodecimo format used by Frederick Warne.
Condition report:
The books are in well-used, worn condition. Both volumes show significant rubbing, scuffing, and rounding to the corners and edges of the boards. The Tale of Two Bad Mice displays more pronounced damage, including a fraying spine with exposed binding material at the foot and dark staining along the bottom edge of the front cover. The Tale of Peter Rabbit shows general surface soiling and wear to the pictorial label. Neither volume is accompanied by a dust jacket.
