This lot comprises a brass coal or kindling scuttle and a companion set on a pedestal stand. The scuttle is of cylindrical form, featuring a hammered martelé finish between smooth polished upper and lower bands. It is fitted with a domed lid topped with a turned ball finial and includes a small ring handle to the side. The companion set consists of a stand on a weighted, stepped circular base with four supporting arms. It includes three fire tools: a shovel, a pair of tongs, and a poker, each featuring decorative turned brass handles ending in ball finials. One arm on the stand is vacant. The items are constructed from brass using a variety of techniques including spinning, casting, and hand-hammering. No maker marks or factory stamps are visible on the pieces. Small orange inventory labels are present on the lid and tool stand.
Condition report:
The set is in generally good condition with a bright, polished finish. There are minor signs of wear consistent with age and use, including light surface scratches and small areas of oxidation spotting. The working ends of the shovel and poker show heavier oxidation and signs of heat exposure typical for fireplace tools. One tool, likely a hearth brush, is missing from the stand.
