APRIL AUCTION

Lot 346: A Victorian Neoclassical Polychrome Transfer-Printed Earthenware Jug

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A large earthenware jug of rectangular section with rounded corners, typical of the Aesthetic Movement or Greek Revival styles produced in Staffordshire potteries circa 1870-1890. The vessel features a cream-coloured body with a moulded imbricated or fish-scale textured pattern to the upper shoulder and spout. It is fitted with a substantial cabled handle having a scalloped outer edge, a form closely associated with period designs from manufacturers such as Wedgwood. The body is decorated on each side with a large rectangular reserve featuring a polychrome transfer-printed scene in the Neoclassical taste. The central image depicts a classically draped female figure wearing a green chiton and a purple veil, holding a foliate branch and standing before a low pedestal or altar. This central scene is framed by multiple decorative borders, including a band of stylised floral medallions and an outer border of interlocking geometric loops. The jug is finished with orange-red line decoration to the rim and vertical edges. No maker’s marks or backstamps are visible in the provided photograph.

Condition report:

The jug is in good overall condition. There is minor rubbing and wear to the coloured line decoration on the rim and edges, consistent with age and use. No significant chips, cracks, or professional repairs are visible. The transfer-printed decoration remains clear with minor age-related fading to the polychrome elements.
